Automatic imports
Connect Big Cartel, Gumroad, Patreon, Shopify, Squarespace, or Wix once, and the people who opt into email there import on their own.
A connection is a platform you’ve authorized XOXO to import from. Each platform has its own rules for who qualifies. The list below explains who comes over and how opt-outs are handled.
Connect a platform
- Open Audience.
- Select Import.
- Choose the platform under Automatic imports.
- Approve the connection on that platform. You’ll land back in XOXO when it’s done.
- Match each platform detail to a field, and optionally choose tags.
- Select Start importing.
Shopify and Wix start with an app install, so choosing one of them sends you to install XOXO there first. The install brings you back to XOXO to finish setup.
Start importing kicks off a first import that brings over everyone who already qualifies. After that, people arrive as they qualify on the platform. Someone already in your audience is updated, not duplicated, and someone who unsubscribed from your emails isn’t added back.
What each platform brings
Every connection brings the email address. The rest arrives only if you map it to a field of the same type: a date into a date field, a number into a number field. The mapping shows each side’s type, and Edit fields adds a field without losing your place.
- Big Cartel: buyers whose most recent order opted into marketing. Maps full name, total spent, orders count, and last order. Doesn’t report opt-outs.
- Gumroad: buyers who haven’t unsubscribed from your Gumroad emails. Maps full name, total spent, orders count, and last order. Uses the buyer’s account email, which can differ from the one they typed at checkout.
- Patreon: members who share their email address with you. Maps full name, total spent, subscription status, and subscription started. Doesn’t report opt-outs, but keeps status current.
- Shopify: customers who accept email marketing at checkout. Maps full name, total spent, and orders count. No last order date, since XOXO asks Shopify only for customers, not orders.
- Squarespace: contacts who opted into email marketing. Maps full name, total spent, orders count, and last order. One connection covers one site, so connect again for another.
- Wix: contacts who opted into email marketing. Maps full name, total spent, orders count, and last order.
Where a platform reports opt-outs, XOXO removes the person when they withdraw consent or ask for their data to be deleted. Big Cartel and Patreon don’t, so someone who leaves there stays until you delete them. A group filtered on Patreon’s subscription status shows who’s still a member.
Edit a connection
Tags you choose during setup apply to everyone the connection adds. You can change the fields and tags later.
- Open Audience, then select Import.
- Select the connection under Active connections, then select Edit.
- Change the fields or tags, then choose whether the changes apply to Only new subscribers or New and existing subscribers.
Fields and tags you remove stay on the subscribers who already have them.
Reauthorize a connection
Connections can expire or be revoked. When that happens the connection shows Needs authorizing and stops adding people, and XOXO emails the account owner.
- Open Audience, then select Import.
- Select the connection under Active connections.
- Select Authorize, then approve the connection on the platform again.
Disconnect a platform
- Open Audience, then select Import.
- Select the connection’s menu, then Disconnect, and confirm.
Subscribers the connection already added keep their tags and field values. Shopify and Wix leave the XOXO app installed on their side, so uninstall it there too if you want the connection gone completely.
Find subscribers from a connection
Filter your audience by Connection to find the people one connection brought in, or by Source set to Connection for everyone who first arrived that way, and save either as a group. Source records how someone first reached your audience, so a person you imported from a file keeps that source even when a connection later updates them.
